varieties of kootus

There are so many varieties of kootus using lots of vegetables, and the preparation is very easy to follow.

masitha keerai (keerai masiyal)


  • Keerai - 1 bundle (any)
  • Thur dhal - 1/4 cup (boiled)
  • Red chilly - 1
  • Green chilly - 1
  • Pepper - 1/2 tsp. (powdered)
  • Cumin seeds - 1/2 tsp.
  • Mustard - 1/2 tsp.
  • Blackgram dhal - 1/2 tsp.
  • Tomato - 1 medium size.
  • Garlic - 10 cloves

method of preparation

Chiru keerai, Mulai Keerai or any other keerai can be used. Wash and cut the keerai well. Cut the green chilly and garlic into small pieces and add to the keerai. Boil them with a little water till very soft. Boil thur dhal and tomato separately and keep it aside. After keerai gets boiled, add salt, thur dhal, tomato and crush well with a churner. Season with red chilly, mustard seeds, blackgram dhal and a bit of asafoetida. Add pepper and mix well. The greenish keerai masiyal is ready. For this masiyal Colacasia roast or roasted vegetables is the right combination.
